PRIMARY FOCUS
The Recreation Attendant is a key member of the Care division at LutherCare Communities (LCC) this position leads activities designed to meet the physical, recreational, emotional and cognitive needs of participants. This position works co-operatively and respectfully with participants, co-workers, and families to create a positive and pleasant environment.
Hours of Work: 4 hour shifts: Monday-Friday (12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.)
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:
1. Participant Programming:
- Supports the Day Program coordinator in the development of recreation programs and events such as baking, sing-a-longs, exercises, holidays, reminiscence etc.
- Facilitate recreation programs and resident participation in activities
- Assist participants upon arrival and departure from the program
2. Participant Care:
- Treat participants with empathy, dignity, and respect
- Accommodate participants’ personal choices
- Maintain professional relationships with participants and their families
- Assist participants only with that which they are unable to complete on their own, to help support independence
- Utilize individual participant information to provide a high standard of care
- Support toileting if needed.
- Assist in clothing and personal care product management
- Supports residents in bladder/bowel management programs
3. Working Environment:
- Actively participate in team and program meetings
- Offer input for purposes of activity/care planning
- Communicates information regarding participants to team members to facilitate continuity of care
- Interacts with co-workers in a respectful, co-operative manner
- Participates in maintaining a clean and safe environment
- Meets and interacts with participants’ families in a kind, courteous manner in order to instill confidence in the day program
4. Other:
- Maintain accurate records and confidentiality
- Participate in self-evaluation process (ie: performance reviews)
- Attend compulsory educational sessions
- Utilize provided literature for self-education purposes
- Good attendance required
- Abide by Policies and Procedure of LutherCare Communities
- Complete other position-related tasks as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS
- Education in related field (i.e.: Therapeutic Recreation) or minimum two years’ experience working with geriatrics and dementia care
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
- Ability to fluently read, write, speak, and understand English
- Ability to work effectively with individuals with dementia and understand the progression of dementia
- Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills
- Ability to demonstrate flexibility and independent initiative
- Physically able to handle all aspects of the job
- Ability to utilize time effectively
EXPERIENCE
- 1 year experience working with individuals with dementia
- Experience providing dementia care an asset
