The Position:

In support of the Vision, Mission and Values of LutherCare Communities, and with funding from Canada Summer Jobs, we are seeking a Summer Groundskeeper to join our Luther Special Care Home team. 

Start Date: To be determined in May/June, and will continue into the summer months.

This position is only available to youth who:

  • are between the age of 15 and 30 years of age (inclusive) at the start of employment;
  • are a Canadian Citizen, permanent resident, or person whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act; and
  • are legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations;

*International students are not eligible. Recent immigrants are eligible if they are Canadian Citizens or permanent residents.

The Applicant: This position will provide day-to-day support to Luther Special Care Home that includes:

Outdoor Maintenance & Upkeep

  • Maintain cleanliness of outdoor areas including walkways, parking lots, patios, and entrances.
  • Remove litter, debris, and ensure exterior spaces remain safe and presentable for residents and visitors.
  • Sweep sidewalks, clear pathways, and ensure surfaces are free of hazards.

Lawn & Garden Care

  • Assist with lawn mowing, trimming, edging, and general turf maintenance.
  • Water plants, shrubs, trees, and garden beds as required.
  • Weed garden areas and help maintain flowerbeds and planters to create a welcoming environment.

Seasonal Tasks (depending on weather)

  • Support seasonal landscaping activities such as planting flowers in spring and fall clean-up.
  • Remove light snow, spread salt, or sand on walkways to reduce slip hazards (if applicable).

Safety & Hazard Management

  • Report safety concerns such as uneven surfaces, damaged walkways, or lighting issues.
  • Ensure outdoor areas remain accessible for seniors with mobility aids (walkers, wheelchairs).
  • Follow organizational health and safety protocols when handling tools and equipment.

Outdoor Facility Support

  • Assist with maintaining outdoor seating areas, community patios, and recreational spaces.
  • Help clean and set up outdoor areas for social events or group activities.
  • Monitor outdoor furniture and fixtures and report damage or repair needs.

Equipment Handling & Care

  • Use basic groundskeeping tools safely (rakes, brooms, trimmers) under supervision.
  • Perform simple upkeep of tools (cleaning, storage, checking supplies).
  • Inform the supervisor when equipment or supplies need restocking or replacement.

Teamwork & Collaboration

  • Work alongside maintenance and other team members to support building operations.
  • Participate in safety briefings and training sessions relevant to groundskeeping or senior care environments.
  • Communicate respectfully with residents, team members, and visitors while performing outdoor duties.

Resident & Community Support

  • Provide friendly interactions with residents enjoying outdoor spaces.
  • Assist seniors who need help navigating outdoor pathways (without providing personal care).
  • Support outdoor recreational or seasonal activities when needed.

Preference will be given to those enrolled in a secondary school or post-secondary trades, maintenance or building operator program or equivalent, a valid class 5 driver's license will be required. Sufficient practical experience to perform the duties is required and experience working with seniors is an asset. Applicants must be able to read, write, speak and understand English fluently, have knowledge of the safe operation and maintenance of hand/power tools and grounds keeping equipment as well as basic knowledge of carpentry. Applicants must be physically able to perform job duties.
